Venetian Grotto Stool (SOLD)

Venice, Italy, attributed to Pauly & Co.

Circa 1870

Carved, gessoed and silvered wood, in the form of a turtle swimming over a rocky outcrop with shells and other crustacea.

During the second half of the 19th century Signor Pauly, a renowned master craftsman with a consuming passion for all things shell-related, set to work. He carefully observed and sketched in meticulous detail every aspect of marine life and inspired by the colours and contours and with characteristic Italian flair, he immortalised these forms in lavishly carved and gilded wood creating sublime suites of irridescent furniture. His pieces incorporate splended mythical sea creatures entwined with living coral, adorned with starfish, crabs, shells and seahorses; fantasy and reality combining to create an exotic magical underwater world as visually exciting and sumptuous as the Royal palaces they would grace.

height 55 cm (21.5 in)
