Sudanese Copper Drum Taken by Lord Kitchener

The semi-spherical beaten copper drum has a hide membrane held in place with wooden pegs. The inscription to the side reads: Malik al Said Muhammad Ahmad al-sheikh Idris 1302 (this date equates to 1884/85)

Provenance:
The drum was captured in a punitive raid mounted by Lord Kitchener to avenge the murder and defeat of Gordon of Khartoum by the Mahdi in January 1885
