Pair of Chinese Yellow Ground Vases

Republic Period 1912 - 1949 with earlier date mark

Signed to the bases with four character marks Yong Qing Hang Chun.

The mark to the side of the vase reading 'Studio of the Greater Odes'  are associated with the Dowager Epress Cixi.

A very large attractive pair of baluster shaped yellow vases and covers painted in grey with birds amongst flowering wisteria branches and peonies.

The combination of grisaille enamelling and the red 'sea mark' lends the main decorative band a scholarly feel, evoking monochrome ink painting, and the design was reputedly taken from Cixi's own compositions of birds and flowers.
