New Guinea Disc Clubs
South East New Guinea
Circa 1870-1890
With old label "Rigo BNG"
These clubs were highly prized weapons both for their effectiveness and because of the immense amount of labour required to produce a pierced basalt disc of this type. They are exceptional in retaining their fine binding and feather work decoration; in almost all known examples this is damaged or missing so that the stone disc is no longer secured in place.
Lengths: 97 cm to 122 cm (38 to 48 in)
Provenance: Collected by the London Missionary Society at the old mission station in Rigo, British New Guinea
