Caledonian Island Clubs
New Caledonia, Coral Seas
Circa 1850
These rare clubs of phallic form (go-maace in the Paici language) were made from Casvarina equisetifolia wood. They both have exceptionally fine patinas achieved by repeated oiling and polishing, that on the left having first been buried in black mud over a long period in order to stain it.
