By Joseph Walsh
This sinuous free form sculpture has grown from a lifetime of observation and fascination with the natural world and in Lilium we witness in particular, an innate appreciation of the bulb which, as Joseph Walsh has remarked, is both "a vessel and vassal to determined intent". From a simple controlled spherical symmetry bursts forth a voluptuous meandering growth "influenced only by time and circumstance". Joseph has explained his exploration of the form as "both a study and an expression of the relationship between the beauty we create and the beauty we allow to happen; the beauty we participate in creating and the beauty we quietly, humbly observe".
Joseph's work has evolved in an instinctive progression from the Enignum series where the flowing curves of the designs were necessarily constrained by the requirements of the furniture - a seat must bear a body and a table offer a level surface. In this body of work - the Lilium series - the artist has allowed himself the freedom of truly exquisite creation.
