Large Circular Yarisaya

Japan

Edo Period (1603-1868) 19th Century

The Yari is a spear which, due to its very long length was also used as a standard in ceremonial processions. The blade of the spear would be encased in a shaped cover, a yarisaya,  of thick bear or horsehair which when carried in a group high in the air above the samurai would have looked very striking.

This example in bear fur is shaped over a hollow bamboo centre which would have slipped over the top of the spear.
