The jar and cover are boldly painted in coloured enamels and gilt with numerous overlapping palm leaves and red blossoms.
Shiroshima Iwataro developed his limestone glaze in 1892 and used it widely thereafter. He was awarded a silver medal at the Arita Ceramic Fair in 1896 and is mentioned in the Toki Daijiten (Dictionary of Ceramics).
