Japanese Bizen Rabbit
Japanese, Signed Yukei
19th Century
Bizen stoneware is fired at very high temperatures over three to four weeks and typically has this almost metalic, reddish brown finish with darker spotted areas.
Although animals had been modelled since the 15th century, the finest were made between 1760 and 1880 when the kilns were at the height of their prosperity and the animals, although still modeled with great vigour, were more carefully finished.
