A Chinese Gold Laquered Wood Sculpture of Buddha
17th/18th Century
Buddha is seated in padmasana with the hands in dhyana and bhumispara mudra. His face is composed and serene with a downward gaze. This sculpture shows Buddha in his earthly life summoning the Earth to witness his victory over the demon Mara who was his last obstacle to attaining enlightenment and revealing to the world the Four Noble truths, the quintessence of Buddhist teaching.
