*Cape Verde is situated in the Atlantic Ocean around 600 km west-northwest of Senegal. The uninhabited islands were discovered and colonized by the Portuguese in the 15th century, later becoming a trading centre for African slaves and then an important coaling and resupply stop for whaling and transatlantic shipping.
