A Life-Size Terracotta by Weddepohl (SOLD)

Circa 1947

A life size terracotta head

By Charles Weddepohl (1902-1976)

Height 31 cm (12 in), with stand 41 cm (16 in)

Charles Weddepohl was born in Amsterdam where he later graduated from the Rijksacademie Voor Beeldende Kunsten where he studied both painting and sculpture. His first exhibitions were of his paintings but his interest in form developed and after 1935 his exhibitions concentrated solely upon his figurative sculptures. However, with the outbreak of the War, times were difficult for artists in the Netherlands and in 1947 he joined his brothers in South Africa to assess the situation there. Although returning to the Netherlands to work he had gained inspiration from his time in South Africa and began to make larger sculptures from 'grogged' clay including a number of sensitively modelled female Negro heads.

Weddepohl exhibited many times from 1932 until 1972 both in the Netherlands and in South Africa and his work can be seen in public spaces in the Netherlands and also at the Beelden aan Zee Museum in Scheveningen.
